The Africa Tourism Leadership Forum (ATLF) is a Pan-African dialogue platform that brings together key stakeholders of Africa’s travel, tourism, hospitality and aviation sectors to network, share insights and devise strategies for intra-Africa travel and tourism growth across the continent, whilst enhancing the brand equity of “Destination Africa”. While the first edition of the forum took place in Ghana in 2018, Durban was chosen as the host city for the second edition.
It was attended by tourism ministers as well as over 500 public and private sector executives. These included representatives of UNWTO, NEPAD, diplomatic corps, directors-general, global hotel brands, travel management companies, associations, regional executives of airlines, tour operators, educational institutions, researchers and many other industry professionals.
On the last day of the forum, a gala event took place, where deserving nominees were awarded for their performance in the African tourism industry. Creative And Moving was amongst the last 3 finalists for the outstanding entrepreneur award, which recognises the entrepreneur (or a small group of entrepreneurs) who had shown excellence in entrepreneurship in Africa’s travel, tourism, hospitality and/or aviation industry.
For the past 2 years, through the tourism entrepreneur programme, we have worked with tourism institutions and universities to educate young entrepreneurs, graduates and final year students about the economic benefits of responsible tourism. In 2018, the Tourism Entrepreneur Programme was first recognised by Airbnb during their first Africa Travel Summit as one of Africa’s most innovative tourism projects.
This year, it was a huge honour to receive the Outstanding Entrepreneur Award, after an extensive screening process and deliberations led by a panel of industry experts. Other finalists and winner at the event included the City of Cape Town (Most Innovative Business Tourism Destination Award ), Ethiopian Airways (Outstanding Tourism Transportation Award) and President Paul Kagame (Destination Africa – Lifetime Award)
